Age Limit

Candidates should preferably be below 35 years of age as on the date of advertisement (31.07.2026). Age relaxation in the upper age limit is applicable as per Government of India norms: SC/ ST candidates: 5 years relaxation; OBC-NCL candidates: 3 years relaxation; PwBD candidates: 5 years relaxation (10 years for SC/ ST-PwBD and 8 years for OBC-NCL-PwBD candidates).

Eligibility Criteria

The minimum eligibility requirement for all departments is a Ph.D. degree with first class or equivalent in the preceding degree, in an appropriate branch, with a very good academic record throughout. The specific bachelor's/ master's degree requirement differs by department.

IIT Guwahati Assistant Professor Educational Qualification (Department-wise)

  • Biosciences and Bioengineering: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree, or 5-year integrated Master's in Biotechnology/ Biochemical/ Chemical Engineering/ Bioinformatics/ Biosciences, or 4-year Bachelor's in Engineering/ Technology/ Agricultural/ Pharmaceutical Sciences, or MBBS/ BVSc, or equivalent integrated degrees in Biological, Physical, Chemical, and Data Sciences, Mathematics, or Statistics.
  • Chemical Engineering: Ph.D. plus Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • Civil Engineering: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree or 5-year integrated Master's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Computer Science and Engineering: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree, or Bachelor's + Master's, or 5-year integrated Master's in Computer Science/ Computer Science and Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • Design: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree or 2-year Master's degree or 5-year integrated Master's in Design, Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Management, Fine Arts, Visual Arts, or Physiology (Ergonomics).
  • Electronics and Electrical Engineering: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree or 5-year integrated Master's in Electrical/ Electronics/ Instrumentation/ Communication/ Telecommunication Engineering.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's degree or 5-year integrated Master's in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Chemistry: Ph.D. plus a Bachelor's and Master's degree, or 5-year integrated Master's in Chemistry/ Chemical Science and Technology.
  • Humanities and Social Science: Ph.D. in the relevant advertised area, with first class or equivalent throughout.
  • Mathematics: Requirement varies by specialization - e.g. Ph.D./ M.Tech./ B.Tech. in Data Science, AI, or Computer Science & Engineering for the ML/ AI track; Ph.D./ Master's/ Bachelor's in Statistics for the Statistics track; Ph.D./ Master's/ Bachelor's in Mathematics for the pure Mathematics track.
  • Physics: Ph.D. plus Bachelor's and Master's degree, or 5-year integrated Master's in Physics/ Applied Physics/ Engineering Physics.
  • School of Business: Ph.D. degree in Management.
  • Mehta Family School of Data Science and AI: Ph.D. in Engineering/ Science relevant to Data Science and AI, plus a 4-year Bachelor's or 5-year integrated Master's in Data Science/ AI, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science and Engineering, or Electronics/ Communication/ Electrical Engineering.
  • School of Energy Science and Engineering: Ph.D. plus a Bachelor's or 5-year integrated Master's in Energy/ Mechanical/ Electrical/ Electronics/ Chemical Engineering.
  • Jyoti and Bhupat Mehta School of Health Sciences and Technology: Ph.D. plus a 4-year Bachelor's in Engineering/ Biotechnology, 4-year BS Programme, 5-year integrated Master's in Engineering, BS(4 years)/ MS(5 years) in Physics/ Maths/ Biological Sciences, B.Pharm, or MBBS (with PhD).

Experience Requirement

Assistant Professor Grade II: Pay Level 10 & 11 - Less than 3 years of post-Ph.D. teaching/ research/ industrial experience. Assistant Professor Grade I: Pay Level 12 - At least 3 years of post-Ph.D. teaching/ research/ industrial experience.

  • Valid SC/ ST/ OBC-NCL/ EWS/ PwBD certificate (in the prescribed Government of India format), if applicable
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC), if currently working in a Government/ Semi-Government organization or educational institution
  • Educational qualification certificates and mark sheets
  • Ph.D. degree/ provisional certificate
  • Experience certificates (for Assistant Professor Grade I claim)
  • Other relevant certificates/ documents as required by the application form
